How Public Transit has been Weaponized as a Political Weapon and Tool for Corruption

2020 Election Promises for Public Transit

A stimulus proposal with transit aid passed the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives October 2020, but no deal has been reached with the Senate and Trump administration. It appears unlikely that transportation agencies will receive any fresh funding until after the election, if at all.

Transit officials interviewed for this 2020 election story pointed to Trump's $1 trillion infrastructure plan that Trump promised in his 2016 presidential campaign hasn't been followed through on.

Only Bernie Sanders includes specific metrics for increasing transit ridership: He wants to boost it by 65 percent by 2030, including building “more livable, connected, and vibrant communities” through transit-oriented development. “For too long, government policy has encouraged long car commutes, congestion, and dangerous emissions,” the plan reads. Specific investments will also target helping seniors, people with disabilities, and rural communities.
